This 5 days intensive training on Child protection in Emergencies (CPiE) aims to strengthen and improve the skills and capacity of emerging child protection in emergencies specialists and other humanitarian personnel’s profiles, providing them with tools to understand the overall global CPiE framework as well as instruments to design, implement, monitor and evaluate key CPiE evidence-based interventions and projects. 

The  course will aim to answer the following questions: Which are the main principles and standards describing a child protection in emergencies programming? Which are the main tools and instruments that an emerging Child Protection in Emergencies (CPiE) specialist other humanitarian personnel’s profiles need to be familiar with? How to develop and enhance ready-to-apply competencies in line with the most recent CPiE literature in a critical and strategic manner?

Who is this course for?

This training is addressed at all individuals from both the global south and north who:

  • Are working or planning to work in humanitarian contexts and/or in the area of child protection and child protection in emergencies;
  • Are interested in acquiring a good understanding of key CPiE principles, concepts and operational approaches and learn how to set-up, implement and monitor/evaluate a CPiE project;
  • Want to be equipped with key skills, competence and tools to assess, identify and respond to individual cases of at-risk children;
  • Demonstrate commitment to completing the 5 days of presential training

 

Course content

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will:

  • Be familiar with the main legal documents, instruments and standards CPiE; know and being able to apply the CP principles as stated in the CPMS
  • Know the Child Protection Assessment Toolkit and be able to directly use some of the tools to design an assessment for project design;
  • Describe the process of identifying common priorities and objectives for a response; 
  • Know evidence-based child protection interventions in emergencies, such as planning and implementing a Child Friendly Space and community-based mechanisms;
  • Be able to identify children’s risks and specific vulnerabilities/groups at risk;
  • Understand the provision of individual care through the case management process; understand and apply the best interest of the child, the different steps of case management and measures to ensure protection from abuse, including Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA).

 

Methodology

The training grounds itself in the adult learning approach, based on experiential learning, experience sharing, co-creation and reflective analysis, with participants playing an active role throughout. The training consists of 5 days of in-presence course that will include cases studies, group exercises, presentations, intervention by external experts and with mentoring and networking during and in-between lessons. The course offers exposure to new ideas and new and seeks to inspire participants to step out of their comfort zones and experiment, all in a safe and reflexive environment. Participants who will attend all the modules will be granted a certificate by HumCap.
