Human Rights

In order to integrate the promotion and protection of human rights, particularly for more vulnerable children and older youth, VIS has been one of the first Italian NGOs to open, in 2002, a Human Rights office. According to the charism of the organization, development cooperation has aim at guaranteeing that human rights are recognized.

Human rights are not a reward for development achievement, but a useful way to contribute to development, as human development is the way to guarantee an effective and enduring enjoyment of rights.

Since 2001 VIS is founder ( since 2006 also spokesperson ) of the Human Rights promotion and protection Committee, a network of 52 NGOs and Italian associations working towards a National Institution for the promotion of Human Rights.

On 19th June 2007, just before the Italian government took up its position as a new member of the UN Council for Human Rights for the next three years, the Committee drew up a monitoring report on the recommendations of the Civil and political rights convention of the Italian government, with the support of the UN High Commission.
