General context of the project:

VIS has been active in Ghana since 2015, mainly in the areas of vocational training, migration, organic farming, and education. The priority objective of VIS in Ghana is to respond to the needs of the most vulnerable segment of the population, focusing mainly on youth and providing vocational training and job placement services. Regarding the main geographical areas of intervention in the country, the NGO's commitment is highlighted: in Accra (Greater Accra Region) and in the Bono, Bono East and Western regions. 

The project, in which the teacher will be involved, aims to offer young Ghanaians the opportunity to gain educational and work experience in Italy through international mobility programs and job placements with companies based in the Italian territory. These pathways are preceded by an initial phase of language and technical training in Ghana. 

General purpose of the position:

This project aims to set up technical education and training courses for young Ghanaians to improve their professional training, create opportunities for work exchange with Italy, and strengthen existing relations between the two countries.  

The project falls within the framework of the vocational and civic-linguistic training programmes defined by Italian law, which provide for the possibility of employing foreign staff interested Italian companies outside the quotas provided for by the regulations. 

Students will have to sustain the A1 level Italian language certification exam and develop knowledge and understanding of the social, economic, legal and civil structures of Italian society. The selected teachers will have to provide Italian language courses that enable the students to pass the A1 level examination. 

Main responsibilities and tasks:

  • Lesson Management: Plan and teach Italian and civic-cultural education lessons using participatory and innovative teaching methods, and develop content that meets the requirements of the CILS A1 exam; 

  • Preparation of Teaching Materials: Organize and adapt teaching and logistical materials based on the intended content and student needs; 

  • Management of Midterm Tests: Design and administer midterm tests to monitor student progress and adjust lessons based on results; 

  • CILS A1 Exam: administer all components of the exam; 

  • Preparation of Reports: Prepare periodic update reports and a final report summarizing the project's progress, activities completed, and results achieved; 

  • Documentation and Returns: Ensure that all documentation and materials provided by VIS are returned at the end of the assignment and that the information is treated confidentially, without disclosure to third parties without written consent. 

Position requirements

Knowledge and skills:

  • Master's degree in linguistics, language mediation, literature, educational sciences or equivalent. 
  • Qualification to administer the CILS A1 exam; 

  • At least 4 years of relevant working experience. 

  • Proven experience in a similar role (specifically in civic education); 

  • Proficiency in Italian language (CEFR Level C1 or higher);  

  • Excellent communication skills in English;  

  • Understanding of adult learning principles and experience in curriculum development;  

  • Educational qualifications in language teaching or related fields (e.g., TESOL, Applied Linguistics) desirable;  

  • Previous experience teaching Italian to foreign migrants (desirable); 

  • Previous experience working in educational/support activities with young people and vulnerable people (desirable); 

  • Previous experience volunteering or as a social worker (desirable); 

  • Previous experience in the same cultural context or geographical area (desirable); 

  • Previous experience working in rural and peripheral contexts (desirable); 

  • Knowledge of the local area and culture of northeastern Italy (desirable). 

  •  English (excellent oral and written proficiency);  

  •  Italian (excellent oral and written proficiency). 

Personal requirements:

  • Proven experience in teaching Italian as a foreign language to adults, in multicultural or international settings;  

  • Strong interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity to effectively engage with diverse learners; 

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
